Here's some tips if you've been having trouble finding a job recently.

Many jobs aren't even advertised on internet job boards and things like that because bosses are busy! Places that make a lot of money are busy! Restaurants, warehouses, grocery stores and shops that have lots of customers often don't have time to advertise a job because the boss is too busy. What also happens is employees tell friends and other family members to get jobs that come open so the boss doesn't always have to advertise that job on a website. You want to make sure that you are going in and applying at the places/businesses that are busy and popular around town.

Another good place to find work is at businesses that are just opening. Wal-Mart in Stockton opened a new location in Spanos Park and hired many people because of this. Other surrounding new businesses will start hiring as well. You'll find restaurants, pizza places, clothing stores in the mall and other shops around town will almost always be hiring when they first open.

You should also let people know that you need a job, tell your friends and family that you need a job because maybe somebody owns a business or one of their friends owns a business. You can often find people that have businesses that are hiring that when you ask around. Post on Facebook or twitter that you need a job! Tell everybody that you know that you need a job and you never know what your friends might do to help you out or what other family members are out there that will help you.

Also our last tip is applying where you want to work instead of applying at the places that are hiring. I would apply at the restaurants you like to eat, movie theater, mall and the places that you like to go.

Could Housing Recovery In Stockton Bounce Back In 2012?

The dramatic fall in home prices in Stockton, CA got it dubbed as the 'Foreclosure Capitol of the World' for a period of time ... before parts of Nevada claimed the title. Not that things have gotten any better in 3 years, as you can drive down any street and see homes for sale (and plenty that probably will be).

However, many economist feel that 2012 might be the year home prices level off - or stop falling in value, and possibly start rising in some areas towards the end of the year. We actually already see areas of California doing better, as high end areas in San Jose, and anything located near the Silicon Valley have seen some homes appreciate in recent years.

Not in Stockton, CA though.

The problem with Stockton is that expensive home prices actually made the city attractive to commuters who couldn't afford a homes closer to the bay area. Now that many executives can afford homes closer to the coast, they chose to live there now. While not every home buyer was a commuter, it does play a factor in the over-supply that Stockton and other cities are dealing with in the valley.

The other factor is many people in the city were making their living because of the housing boom. Everyone from insurance agents, to underwriters, land owners and the construction workers themselves felt rich for a few years. The reason why the Silicon Valley has recovered quickly is because the companies (and employees) make money from websites, not building shopping malls and homes. With so many low skilled workers in Stockton - and many of the talented ones leaving, the high paying jobs just aren't what they used to be for the under-educated.

So while many economists expect home prices to level off and possibly go up sometime in 2012, we think the average Stockton resident isn't capable of buying a house at the current time because they don't have the skills to get a high paying job. Not to mention, so many people got burned - they can't even qualify for a loan if they wanted to.

That doesn't mean prices will continue to fall.

There are some factors that could help.
  • 'Rich' Investors who buy homes for rental income.
  • Home prices rise on the coast, causing lower income workers to move.
  • Prices have fallen so much, it is hard for them to fall further.

Modesto Junior College MJC Job Fair - September 28, 2011

Sometimes the best way to get experience talking to employers and getting yourself in front of businesses is by going to job fairs. These days, employers get 100's if not 1000's of people applying for a job - so it's real difficult to stand out, even if you have a great resume and skills.

A job fair allows you to get face to face with employers - so you can make that impression that will make an impact. If you live around the Modesto area, you will want to check out the bi-annual MJC Job Fair.

When: September 28, 2011

Where: Modesto Junior College

The event is free of charge, and the job fair attract businesses that are hiring FT or PT ... so no commission or staffing jobs will be present. Make sure you bring your best clothes and several copies of a quality resume. As always, you can find jobs in Modesto at 209 Valley Jobs anytime.

Even With Increasing Fees - Community College Still A Great Value

Many of you have been searching jobs and trying to make ends meet for months, if not years. One of the best resources for the unemployed in the valley are the Community Colleges that have low (subsidized) fees that make going to school affordable.

Fees used to be under $20 per unit for decades, as the state of California didn't struggle with budget deficits as they are now. Unfortunately, with the lack of property tax revenues, the state has struggled to make ends meet - and that means higher fees at the community colleges across the state. There have been generous fee waivers, however those too have come under fire as of late - as money is really tight these days in California.

Even with all the increase in fees, the value you get for going to college out weighs the costs you have to pay for the classes. Delta College, located in Stockton - and Modesto Junior College are the valley's finest (and largest) community colleges that accept students from almost any educational background.

The main thing about your decision to go to college - is to not worry about the expenses. Focus more on what you plan on studying, and what you plan on doing once you are finished. Both Delta College, and MJC offer programs to all students that get good grades to transfer to more prestigious school, such as UC and State schools.

Studies show that if you have a college education, unemployment for that group of people is less than 5% right now. If you have only a high school diploma, those numbers almost triple. Even if you don't achieve the 4 year degree, any advanced education will show potential employers that you tried to improve your skills during the tough economic times. There are jobs in Stockton and jobs in Modesto, but to really make serious income, going to school is your best bet to make a living in the valley.
